SUMMARY:Diving Deep: The Art of Memoir
DESCRIPTION:Discover the life-changing potential of memoir writing in a workshop designed to take you deep into your heart and your past\, to mine your own life for the stories that need telling. \nDonofrio believes that writing heals. Writing exercises are designed to stimulate memories\, which you will learn to craft into compelling stories. It’s in the revising\, in the application of craft—scene writing\, using specificity and reflection\, moving around in time—that we are able to gain distance and reach deeper meaning\, insight and understanding\, compassion for ourselves and others\, and ultimately transformation. \nThrough in-class writing prompts\, overnight assignments\, and sharing your work\, you will not only learn craft but develop camaraderie and have fun. You may even find that what made you rage and cry now makes you laugh. \nWhen we take the time to write about our lives we see\, as Gerald Manley Hopkins put it so eloquently\, “The deep down of things.” All that is required is a strong desire and the courage to write the truth. \nFor more information\, and to register\, go to the Omega Institute website.

SUMMARY:Writers and Wisdom Keepers:Illuminating a Path During Dark Times
DESCRIPTION:Come to Woodstock Bookfest\, April 3-6. This panel will take place on Saturday\, April 5\, 2025 at 2PM. Join these three exceptional writers\, Janus Adams\, Beverly Donofrio\, Abigail Thomas\, hosted by Gail Straub as they discuss how the wisdom that comes with aging influences their craft. As wisdom-keeper wordsmiths\, part of their role is to illuminate a path during dark times. Writers who keenly observe the world\, how do they steer clear of cynicism and despair\, political certainties and smug ideologies? Since writing and storytelling have long been known to ask essential questions about the human condition\, what are the questions we need to be asking now? And how does the artist’s imagination help cultivate an abiding humaneness and hope despite all the current challenges the world faces? \nEngage with three luminary authors in an exchange that promises to be both thought provoking and soul stirring!\nSee the panel description and read about all the panelists.

SUMMARY:Memoir Master Class | Catapult | New York City
DESCRIPTION:This is a master class in writing memoir. We will write in class from long-tested prompts that will spark your creative energy. SUMMARY:Get Some Writing Done | Omega Institute | Rhinebeck\, New York
DESCRIPTION:Put pen to paper—or fingers to keyboard—in this writing workshop with master memoirist Beverly Donofrio and novelist/memoirist Kaylie Jones. \nDonofrio and Jones believe that writing heals. Writing exercises are designed to stimulate memories\, which you will learn to craft into compelling stories. It’s in the revising\, in the application of craft—scene writing\, using specificity and reflection\, moving around in time—that we reach deeper meaning\, insight and understanding\, compassion for ourselves and others\, and ultimately transformation. \nWhether you are embarking on a novel\, writing essays\, or a book-length memoir\, our time-tested prompts will help you overcome roadblocks that in the past have prohibited your forward momentum\, and will help you organize your structure. \nThrough our in-class writing prompts\, overnight assignments\, and sharing your work\, you will not only learn craft but also develop camaraderie and have fun. You may even find that what made you rage and cry now makes you laugh. \nThroughout the workshop we engage in an ongoing discussion of the writing life and how to sustain it after we return home.

SUMMARY:The Short Essay | Holy Cross Monastery | West Park\, New York
DESCRIPTION:Mark Twain once said of a letter he wrote\, If I had more time I could have made it shorter. A well-crafted short essay or personal story is intimate and moving. It combines the narrative techniques of fiction with the conciseness of lyric poetry. To create such a well-crafted gem\, you need the critical eye of an editor and the ear of a story teller. In this workshop we’ll look at some great examples of the short form and use free-writing prompts to generate ideas for our own short\, personal stories. By the end of the weekend you will have crafted a heartfelt story from the material of your life. \nLimited to 10 participants \nCall to reserve a space: 845.384.6660 or email: guesthouse@hcmnet.org

SUMMARY:Memoir Master Class | Catapult | New York City
DESCRIPTION:This is a master class in writing memoir. We will write in class from long-tested prompts that will spark your creative energy. The work will be read aloud\, discussed\, and used as vehicles for developing a virtual toolbox of literary techniques to take home with you as you plunge more deeply into your writing: We will examine: where to begin your story; the composition of scenes; transitions both within and between scenes\, from present moment to reflection\, backstory\, and flash forward; the use of white space; techniques for breaking through emotional barriers to diving deeper; how to summarize effectively (gallop through time in a compelling way); recreate dialogue from the distant past; how to write detailed prose that is so alive it reels the reader in and keeps them turning the page. \nMaster Memoirist Beverly Donofrio has published three critically acclaimed memoirs. Her first\, the New York Times bestselling Riding in Cars with Boys\, was made into a popular movie\, and her second\, Looking for Mary\, was a Barnes and Noble “Discover” pick. She has published three children’s books\, her latest\, Where’s Mommy was named a best picture book by The New York Times. Her essays have appeared in many anthologies\, periodicals\, and magazines\, including The New York Times; The Washington Post; Los Angeles Times; O\, The Oprah Magazine; Marie Claire; More; Allure; Spirituality and Health; The Huffington Post; Slate; Cagibi; Hippocampus; Long Reads; and Brevity. Her award-winning NPR documentaries can be heard through Sound Portraits. She gives workshops around the country and is currently on the faculty of the low-residency MFA program at Wilkes University. She is working on a fourth memoir\, a collection of life stories about becoming a wild woman and determined feminist as the natural result of being born the daughter of a guardian of the patriarchy\, a man who wore a badge on his chest and a billie club\, black jack and gun on his belt. \nThe workshop is from 1pm-4pm each day. \n

SUMMARY:The Art of Crafting Your Memoir | Woodstock Bookfest | Woodstock\, New York
DESCRIPTION:Discover the life-changing potential of memoir writing in a workshop designed to take you deeper into your heart and your past\, to mine your own life for the stories that need telling. In a supportive environment\, through writing assignments\, sharing and discussion you will be taught how to write lively scenes\, develop voice\, make smooth transitions\, to transform dialogue as it is really spoken to pared down\, written dialogue with the ring of authenticity—for starters. You’ll create first drafts\, receive feedback and instruction\, and then re-write at least one piece\, using techniques that invite the reader to experience vicariously what you lived. When we take the time to write about our lives\, we see\, as Gerard Manley Hopkins put it so eloquently\, “The deep down of things.” Telling your story can be profound and transformative. All that is required is a strong desire and the courage to write the truth. \nLocation in Woodstock TBA.
